Johnston County's Work First program helps put welfare recipients to work. The program provides a monthly check to families. The amount of the check depends on the number of individuals in the family and the amount of family income. There must be a child under age 18 in the home.

Child care financial assistance. A combination of state and federal funds are used to provide subsidized childcare services to eligible families through a locally administered voucher system. Income eligibility limits are in place. All households must meet an income test. There are also work requirements.

The Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) is a year-round program which runs July 1st through June 30th each year (or until funds are exhausted) statewide. CIP provides assistance to low-income families experiencing or in danger of heating or cooling.

Johnston County's Work First program helps put welfare recipients to work. The program provides a monthly check to families. The amount of the check depends on the number of individuals in the family and the amount of family income. There must be a child under age 18 in the home.

DSS - Medical Transportation

Services Offered:

Medical transportation can only be provided to Medicaid recipients to transport them to their medical appointments, for services that are covered by Medicaid.


DSS - Transportation

Services Offered:

Transportation is arranged and provided by Johnston County Social Services for child services (children who are being seen as clients of the child services group within social services.) Work First (clients who are participating in the Work First program so they can travel to and from their job locations).

JCATS provides a variety of transportation including medical trips in county and to destinations out of county, workplace and job training, senior centers, child care centers, social services, public hearings, dental care. JCATS also provides non-emergency medical transportation and other contracted services (See above). JCATS strives to also provide Rural General Public (RGP) transportation to school, work, appointments, etc., at a reduced cost to riders.


Disabled American Veterans (DAV)

Provides free transportation for Veterans to local VA hospitals twice a week.

Age Served: 18 and older

Provides State-regulated Adult Day Health Care Services with professional staff for adults (age 18 and older) with chronic conditions.

These supervised services allow seniors, disabled adults and our Veterans to remain in their own homes and give their caregiver a much-needed break.

Services include:

  • Diabetic care program
  • Falls management program
  • Health care services (coordinated with personal physicians)

Johnston County Veterans Services

Services Offered:

The Johnston County Veterans Services Office assists Eligible Veterans, their dependents and/or surviving spouses, children of deceased Veterans, members of the Reserves or National Guard, and active-duty service members in applying for benefits and services from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs.
