Notification of Discharge of Untreated Wastewater - February 16, 2025

Smithfield, NC –General Statute 143-215.1C requires the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment facility to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters. In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to the media:

The Johnston County wastewater collection system had a discharge of untreated wastewater on February 16, 2025 from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the vicinity of 2355 Swift Creek Road and US 70. The discharge was approximately 251,000 gallons, and the untreated wastewater discharged into drainage ways to surface waters that flow to Reedy Branch Creek. The discharge occurred due to mechanical failure from intermittent power interruptions.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on February 16, 2025 and is reviewing the matter. For more information, contact the Johnston County Public Utilities Department at 919- 989-5075.
